Dr Godwin Omondi Opinde – Chairman
Dr. Opinde Chairs ECI’s Board of Directors. He is a Lecturer in the Department of Environmental Planning & Management at Kenyatta University (KU), Kenya. Before joining academia he served as an Environmentalist in the Planning and Environment Department of the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) and also at Kenya’s National Environment Management Authority (NEMA). He has also worked as an Environmental Consultant at Edge Associate Company Ltd and as an in-house consulting environmentalist in various firms.
Dr. Opinde has extensive work experience and expertise in mainstreaming environmental and social aspects in donor funded projects and programs; policy analysis, EIA/EA, SEA, project monitoring and evaluation, as well as preparation of environmental and social management plans, Clean Air Action Plans (CAAPs) and project based Resettlement Action Plans (RAPs). In addition, he is actively engaged in research especially on topical issues of environmental and natural resources management, climate change adaptation and mitigation, Transport Planning and air quality management. He has worked on various projects for international organizations including The World Bank Group, African Development Bank (AfDB) and UN Environment. He has also participated as a distinguished delegate in the IGAD Regional Infrastructure Master Plan dialogue forum.
Dr. Opinde is a DAAD Alumni, a beneficiary of Netherlands Fellowship Program and National Research Fund – Kenya awardee. He is a fellow at Africa Research Impact Network (ARIN) and a member of International Network for Environmental Compliance & Enforcement (INECE) Sub-Saharan Africa Academic Committee. He holds a PhD in Environmental Planning & Management from Kenyatta University; Post-graduate Certificate in Geo-information Science from University of Twente, ITC-Netherlands; Master of Environmental Planning and Management from Kenyatta University, Kenya and Bachelor of Education (Science) from Egerton University, Kenya. He is a registered and licensed Lead EIA/EA expert with NEMA-Kenya and a Lead Member of Environmental Institute of Kenya (EIK).
